The Race Thing

Posted in Race, The White House on November 9, 2008 by cluevendor

I believe that Obama as President will be terrible for this country, perhaps irreversibly so, because of his personal philosophy and policy positions.  I have never considered his racial make-up as being important, although it certainly did help him get elected.

But leaving policy aside, here are a few of my thoughts on the Race Thing.  I realize I covered a couple of these in my Open Letter to America post, but hey, after a couple of days of hangover-recovery and thought, I feel more like myself and wish to offer thoughts reflective of that.

I grew up in a Mississippi Delta town that could be most charitably described as a horrifying cesspool, a festering example of the unspeakable idiocy of liberal welfare programs.  I’m a racial minority in my hometown, and grew up interacting with black people far more than almost any whites I’ve ever met.  Over the course of my moderately-young life, I have seen the very worst of black people as well as the best, and quite a bit in between.  All fine and good: that’s called perspective.  A helluva lot more perspective than most white kids ever get.

Since the election, I have offered my black friends my very sincere congratulations on seeing a black man elected President of the United States.  I felt, watching them and listening to them in the months leading up to the election, that they strongly doubted whether such a thing could ever happen.  I desperately wish it could’ve been a different black man–Alan Keyes, or Thomas Sowell, or anyone but this Marxist used-car salesman we’re stuck with–but look, I’m not made of wood.  The joy I’ve seen over the racial aspect of this election–a black man being elected President–is undeniably real and, in my opinion, perfectly legitimate.  What honest person could deny the struggles black people have dealt with and overcome?  No honest or decent person could.  So I offer my congratulations.  And I too take comfort and encouragement in the fact that one of the darkest questions about America has been decisively answered.

But now that it’s done, I will no longer listen to anyone bitch about how racist this country is, or how Black Folks just can’t get ahead.

So, to the black Americans who spend way too much time in their lives blaming their troubles on Whitey: shut the fuck up.    I repeat: Shut. . .The. . .Fuck. . .Up.

To all other Obama voters (including non-whiny black people): I look forward to debating policy matters and moral questions with you, as your guy takes center stage.  If you’re as strong, patriotic, and resilient as you surely claim to be, you will leave race out of it.

I Spent Today Exercising My Second Amendment Rights

What did you do?

Today I went to Don’s Weaponry in North Little Rock, did some target shooting at their in-house range, and purchased this fine self-defense product: a Taurus Ultra-Lite .38.  Ladies, this is an ideal gun for our home self-defense or concealed-carry: light as a feather, easy to control, just the tiniest breath of a kick, and almost impossible to accidentally discharge.  Should you–God forbid–ever be required to bust a cap in someone’s ass, this type of revolver is the easiest gun to grab and fire in the oh, three to five seconds you’ll have to defend your life.

The original purpose of my visit to Don’s today was to help a good friend buy, and learn to shoot, her first gun.  I ended up buying one of my own after discovering that my trusty old (key word: OLD) .38 six-shooter locked up every time I tried to shoot it, which it had NEVER done in its long, long lifetime.  Talk about getting chills up your leg: all I could think was, what if that shit had happened when I actually needed the gun?  Sweet Jesus.  But I digress.

We overcame the obstacle by renting a gun from Don, and I have to say, teaching another girl (whom I will call “S”) to safely and confidently handle, load, and fire a gun was one of the most gratifying things I’ve done in a very long time.  I shot first, to demonstrate the proper technique to S., and I was hoping that I would provide a good example because I hadn’t shot in about a year.  Well.  Turns out I rocked the shit out of it.  Yeah, I’m bragging.  You would too: my groupings were wicked sharp.  But I have to give proper credit where it’s due: my dad and brothers raised me right.

S. saw my stunning accuracy and control and got right into it.  She did an amazing job, and by the time we finished our box of ammunition I could tell she was well on her way to being a predator’s worst nightmare.  I have a number of friends who, for various reasons, have neglected their fundamental, God-given right of effective self-defense, but I was particularly worried about S. lately because she lives alone in the Heights, where Anne Pressly was just brutally murdered, and she is TINY.  Well, now she has an equalizer, and I fully intend to get her skinny little ass to the firing range every couple of weeks until she is an expert shot.

I cannot think of any reason for a woman NOT to empower themselves by getting a gun.  And for those of you who doubt your ability to teach your children not to mess around with the family gun (or who doubt the willingness of their children to learn the lesson), the revolver I bought today comes with a lock.  Stick a tiny key in and bam–no accidents.

An Open Letter to America

Dear America,

Well, you’ve spoken.  You have just elected a socialist President.  Senator Infanticide will be the next President of the United States.  Congratulations!

Now begins the nationwide orgasms over electing a black man President.  I’d like to have the Audacity to Hope that there will now be an end to the whining, but of course that won’t happen.  Nevertheless, Obama’s election officially marks the end of my listening to any of the puling bullshit about how racist this country is.

But America, if you find yourself unhappy in the next few years with your smooth-talking new President–well, you deserve whatever you get.  Have fun, folks.  You wanted change, and you’re definitely going to get it.  If the change isn’t what you hoped for, you have no one to blame–no one at all.  I myself will smile at the suffering of the morons who elected this cipher of a man to the highest office in the world.

Tonight, I salute John McCain, one of this nation’s finest and most dedicated heroes, for stepping up against a demagogue Marxist at an age when most people devote their lives to comfort and relaxation.  What a splendid, courageous, wonderful man.  I’m now watching him concede the election–the most important of his life–with a composure, generosity, and class I have never seen in any politician aside from Ronald Reagan.  John McCain now has a permanent spot in my extremely small pantheon of American superheroes.

I salute the beautiful, steely Sarah Palin, and what she promises for the coming Conservative Revolution (to which I will dedicate the rest of my life).  It will be the Sarah Palins and the Bobby Jindals who will rise from the bog.

So go ahead and jump around, celebrate, contract some STDs, etc.  We’ll see, bitches!

Smooches,

CV

. . . but I’m a bit worried we might have a Situation here in Little Rock.  You’ve probably heard/read about the recent murder of Anne Pressly, a beautiful, talented, and (by all accounts) wonderful young news anchor at our ABC affiliate.  If you haven’t, go here.  Awful subject to start this blog on, but it’s weighing on my mind pretty heavily (being a single woman living in Little Rock).

The cops have called their investigation “very tight,” but Little Rock being what it is, a number of details the police have not released have nevertheless been steadily leaking out.  The sources appear to be from inside the police department and the hospital where Anne was treated before she died last weekend.

I’m not going to put what I’ve heard on the Internet, but believe me, it’s horrifying.  For one thing, the attack was far more violent than the police have indicated so far, and had an element of sadism that has been completely unreported.  There’s no such thing as an “average” or “normal” murder–they are all atrocities–but there are certain crimes that are more ominous for the public at large.  I worry that this might be one.

Even though there are gaping holes due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, the available pieces of this puzzle form a very scary picture.

1)  Anne Pressly was a moderately “low risk” victim: she wasn’t involved with drugs, prostitution, gangs, or other shady environments/people that would normally put a person at a higher risk for being a victim of violent crime.  I use the word “moderately” only because she was an on-air personality and therefore a minor local celebrity, which always ups the chances of drawing a freak.

2)  The crime itself was extremely “high risk”: it occurred in the Heights, which is one of the most affluent areas of town, and aside from one particular street, the most high-status neighborhood in Little Rock.  The Heights is almost warren-like, marked by narrow, winding streets, gorgeous old trees, and tasteful older houses on small lots (no McMansions there).  When I say small lots, I mean the houses on either side of Anne’s rented bungalow are almost close enough to reach out and touch from her property line.  Also, I would bet that almost all homes in the Heights have security systems.  I feel that the nature of her neighborhood by itself rules out the possibility that her attack was a burglary gone wrong.

3)  Further ruling out the burglary scenario: her BMW was in the driveway, and only her purse was stolen.  Folks, burglars don’t enter occupied homes and do the things that were done to her in order to steal a purse.  They just do not.

4)  The attack was. . .well, beyond.  Whoever entered her home seemed to do so with the intention of killing her.  And they were perfectly justified in assuming they’d done so when they left.

From what is “out there” right now, I can’t help but think that she was specifically targeted and probably stalked by someone whose appetite for violence is not that of your garden-variety thug.  Apparently, she never mentioned any stalker or potential stalker to anyone, so it’s possible that the killer watched her just long enough to figure out where she lived and her basic routine.  And then penetrated this safe, close-knit neighborhood, committed a vicious murder, and slipped away in clothes that must have been covered in blood, without being detected by anyone.  He brought his own weapon–an undisclosed type of blunt object–with him.  And there was no forced entry, although the fact that her dogs were found outside makes me wonder if he was in the backyard, watching, when she let her dogs out, and seized that opportunity to rush into her house.

So basically, I’m scared shitless.  I really hope they catch the guy/s soon, because I find it very hard to believe that someone capable of that type of planning and sustained, sadistic violence will not do it again.

So those are my little theories and thoughts on the Situation.  I am now going to watch Laser Cats three or four times to remind myself that there is beauty and perfection in the world.  Because seriously….holy shit.
